They make ear mite drops. You should be able to get them at a pet store or drug store. My cat had mites and the drops helped her.I'm watching my sons dog...and i believe he has ear mites..how can i get ride of them??
Ear mites are UNMISTAKEABLE. You'll see a dark brownish-black crusty inside his ears that resembles COFFEE GROUNDS. Yes, coffee grounds. If what is in his ears does not have that gritty look, you may want to take him in to see a vet. If it looks gritty, then just go to your local pet store and get some earmite drops and ear cleaner. My cats had earmits once and I just gently cleaned their ears daily before treating them with the drops, and it cleared up in no time.
Gave a thumbs up to Kat-lady's ans.

Either use a dropper or cotton ball and swab out dogs' ears with olive or mineral oil, 2-3 times a day, will initially be very tender his ears. This oil will smother and kill off the mites that's there. So saturate the ear with the soaked cotton in ear canal.

Then in between oil applications rinse/wipe out ear canal with hydrogen peroxide 3% (do NOT use alcohol, it will sting like ';h';).

Keep up for as long as black cruddy mites are presents.

The ears will be inflamed and sore so be gently and praise dog since the mites have causing him much suffering with severe itchiness, pain.

But pls. treat ASAP.

I have seen animals go completely deaf permanently and walk with a permanent head-tilt from untreated mite infestation.

Hope this helps. It will work, be consistant and faithfully do.

(I have treated many rescued/trapped animals for ear mites successfully without vet visit)
out here, we don't have that many things for pets in pet stores. what i do for my dog is use baby oil to clean it up, then i mix bleach and water in a small bowl and sparingly use it on his ears - as advised by my dog's vet of course.
put some warm [not too hot] baby oil, or olive oil in his ears and place cotton ball in each ear..Leave for 15 minutes , remove cotton balls and wipe ears out with clean cotton balls or gauze. repeat 2 times a day until you no longer see black stuff. The black stuff is feces from the mites. The oil will smother the mites.
my one dog just had that. bambi had a yeast infection. i finally had to take her to the vet. i thought it was mites and got ear mite med @ wal-mart. you can also get it @ pet smart. hope the dog gets better real soon.
Our dog has the same problem and we use (sparingly) hydrogen peroxide. It seems to do the trick, but watch out it'll bleach anything cloth it touches!
This requires ear mite ear drops.. You can get them at Walmart but from past experience, I find that the ones available from the vet are far more effective. From your description of the poor dogs suffering I would suggest a vet visit.
It is highly possible that his ears are infected with yeast or bacterias. Does your son clean his ears with ear cleansers regularly? My dog had ear infections as well and her symptons are very much like your son's dog. You could get a ear cleanser from the vet, and clean his ears for several days (those ear cleansers are acidic and could kill those bacterias and yeasts and help relief the itchyness.) But the best treatment is to get him to see the vet to check his ears if you'd like to be more assured.
it's best to take the pooch to the vet to be sure they are mites, here are some sites on treating them:

i would take your dog to the vets, you don't say what breed of dog it is.i thought my bedlington terrier had ear mites so i put drops in her ears it came to that she didn't have mites she had a ear infection because she had got them wet and her ears hang down and they didn't dry
my dog had them - the vet gave me a fluid to squirt in his ear that killed the mites - then i had to wash his ear with a cleansing rinse. i'm pretty sure the med to kill mites was a prescrip, so you would have to go the the vet.
she is right that is the only way to to get rid of them

so the first answer is the right answer give her best answer

you don't need to spend money on a vet I have owned dogs for 30 yrs and they sell what you need at pet stores like pet co or the store just look when you are shopping

My dog gets black stinky stuff in his ears and its an allergy to grass and I wash his ears with soap and water and use a sprayer or hose to rinse and he shakes the water out and I repeat this untill nothing is coming out anymore and I do this once a month and he hasn't any problem and doesn't shake his head I used to get stuff from the vet to put in his ears but it is an every day fight to do put something in his ears and soap and water effects last longer he does better longer the other stuff every day for life.and thats cant be good for him
Take him to the vet on Monday. He can diagnose what puppy has and cure whatever it is. Best to not let these things go on long. They cause more damage and end up being more expensive to treat.
It could possibly be an ear infection rather than mites. So I'd check with the vet first. If it's mites you're not out much for them taking a culture. But if it's an infection and you're treating him for ear mites he could lose his hearing.

While you're waiting to get him to the vet pour staight rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball squeeze out the excess and wipe his ear out. That'll help a little with the itch and stink. They'll just have to go deep for a culture to check.
